My students recently wrote a narrative response to a prompt for a district assessment. To my surprise, one of my sweet girls used profanity in dialogue. Of course, authors do this all of the time...

It's a first for me in 22 years of teaching. I think she tactfully and purposefully included this to make a point. Should this be addressed? What would you do?

I might ask her about it, privately, and in person. Otherwise, it's no big deal. Visceral emotions come out in passionate writers.

this at the high school level, and how old is she? This is commonly allowed at the college level, and as long as she used it tactfully and purposefully, I see no reason to correct her.

I would allow it too, but I would explain to her that in some situations it is too risky (definitely on any standardized test). If she doesn't know who her reader is she risks alienating or offending them.
