Well, the presence of a few gossip / troll gangs that have been harassing people, even those who were once among their ranks, didn't help.

You're right, it's not always easy. Sometimes it takes a lot of extra time and effort. But then it can be so worth it.

Aww, people are friendly! Personally, I don't seek friends in SL just cos I prefer quiet time to decorate. I'm HR in real life and having to talk to people after work really pisses me off. XD

That does suck. We all get hurt. I look at it as an experience to learn and grow from. Shouldn't stop anyone from making new friends.

Just start talking with people, you will see they want to make new friends too
