yeah - the first are hatching before the last have even hit the bottom. I'm not sure about the specs above the water - are they tiny flying ones? Or just larvae climbing the glass?

the larvae live in the water for quite some time, shed their skins a few times, and become the same size as their parents before they leave the water.

That makes more sense - it was weird seeing them appear to fly because that made no sense with the way I thought these things worked. But if they hatched like greenfly, without a larval phase, I could see it.

there'd be no point bothering with the water, in that case.

yeah - unless the reaction to water is what caused them to hatch. I could see that being a vestigial stage that they just hadn't evolved past. But it makes more sense the real way.
