I've been watching a DVD of the Globe Theatre's production of 'Twelfth Night', with an all-male cast including Stephen Fry as Malvolio. Definitely recommended.
Oh, that does sound interesting. Among other things, working single-sex is always a fascinating illustration of how gender issues can dissolve or transform when you alter the players.
Went to a single-sex girl's school, and did theater. No, we didn't restrict ourselves to all-female casts. It was fascinating to watch a male role blossom for a female player.
Same is true in reverse. And every time I've seen it happen, it says complex and interesting things about gender, gender roles, and gender assumptions.
To this day, I swear that slash-writers in fanfic are making complex use of a similar dynamic: erase gender, and see what happens to issues of love and sex.
