Yup. There's an infamous workhouse building at Stockport known as The Grubber. It was shown on TV a while ago and they described what went on in the old days. Absolutely horrendous.

People were severely punished for being poor...including separating husbands from wives, parents from children and sisters from brothers.

I knew the US state was very tough on drug crimes but that system is terrible. It's even worse that corporations make so much $ out of prisoners. I'm stunned.
