I have an appointment to see my family doctor in early Nov. (Yeah it's far off, but I have a stupid fear of doctors and mine is really good...so he's worth the wait.) Anyway...
It's to test for diabetes. It kinda runs in my family? And beyond cold symptoms, I've had this seemingly eternal exhaustion I can't kick lately, especially around eating times.
There's a number of other things, too. But I have no way to test my blood ATM because I'm not diagnosed and...IDK, I'm feeling really shitty right now after just a couple bites of food and some OJ.
Light headed, tired, nauseated...
And I'm wondering if maybe my blood sugar is too high? I had a coffee today which might have helped kick it up, and I've been stressed, took cold medicine...and I have a cold which could also jack it up as far
So if that's the case and it is high...what are ways to lower it again safely?
If it's high, either wait it out or insulin. Maybe do some light exercise. Avoid sugars and other carbs. In the future always have a bit of
Protein and/or fat with your carbs to slow absorption
If you had juice your bs probably went up and then crashed a bit - both high and low can result in nausea and such. Everyone reacts a little
different. Drink plenty of fluid but try to stick to non sugary things. So no juice or soda basically or at least keep the juice to a min.
Sickness fucks with your blood sugar anyway but you might start keeping a log of what you eat and how you feel after eating. I assume you
can get self glucose monitors at a local pharmacy. The testers themselves are cheap but the test strips are annoyingly pricey.
As I don't have insulin...I'll maybe take a walk and keep drinking lots of water. No more juices, and I don't drink soda much and haven't in weeks, so that's no problem. A log is a good idea...to show my doc.
You basically just prick your finger and put a little blood on the test stick and the meter will tell you your blood glucose
Yeah, I'm broke right now...but if I come into some money or can find out just how much from my pharmacy, my mother might be able to spot me for a tester and strips.
Test first thing in the morning and then an hour after a meal to get a good gauge on how your body is responding.
Now that much I do know. XD I'm hoping I don't have diabetes...but at the rate I've been feeling and with how practically everyone in my family has it, I wouldn't be surprised.
Your morning resting blood sugar cab give you a good estimate of how in control your bs is.
What's it supposed to be around?
Oh. OK. c: well I hope you don't have it either! But if you do at least it is a manageable thing.
I read that diabetics feel sick when it's low and around 70...so what's a good number?
Uh... like... 65 to 80? I think? For fasting that is
65 is low but if that's when you first get up in the morning it's not too bad
._. What's a good...thing to have for lunch? Would tuna be good?
Tuna should be fine. c: Tuna on a piece of toast maybe. One slice of bread is one serving of carbs and having one or two per meal is good.
Well 1 to 4 depending but in any case Tuna is good because protein and a bit of fat
yay tuna! \o/ i love fish so this makes me happy
cucumber with that should be fine too right?
.-. because tuna and cucumber is divine...
Carbs high in fiber are good too cuz of taking longer to digest and such
Okay, I made tuna and cucumber on 2 slices of toasted 9 grain bread which is high in fiber and omega 3 .-.
sargentsnarky: BTW, bb...I can't thank you enough <3 My granfolks aren't the easiest people to talk to on good days let alone about health, so this means a lot.
I mean they're easier to talk to than my actual folks, but...when it comes to health stuff, they can be very judgmental and insensitive. :|
:C well I know dealing with diabetes can be a pain esp early on so I am glad to help!
I really appreciate it <3 Just having someone to talk with is a huge help >_< I feel loads more comfortable than I did this morning when I...was a nauseous wreck.
I've been downing lots of water, and I think this sandwich is helping, too. .-.
If you sugar spiked and crashed a sandwich would def help! /snuggs
HMMMM... can't you just be both .-.
Um... might taste weird o:
I'm sorry I wasn't conscious when you posted this, but
sargentsnarky covered everything i would have, so yay <3
from the sounds of it, if you are diabetic it'd be Type 2, since if you were Type 1 your blood sugar would just keep going up and it wouldn't be able to crash xD luckily Type 2 can usually be controlled with
diet and exercise, and it sounds like your body responds pretty well to those things <3
but yeah, definitely drink lots of water! high blood sugar dehydrates you pretty quickly and that's usually what makes you feel nauseous and super sleepy <3
if you start feeling super confused or shaky, eat something! your diet sounds pretty good, but yeah, slow releasing cards and protein are great
fish is awesome for helping keep things in check, so it's good you like it <3 those salmon filets you make in parchment paper are awesome. i recommend quinoa as your starch if you can, it works wonderfully for
me. of course everybody and every body is different, so definitely don't change things around too much until you get tested and talk to your doc. if you get diagnosed they'll probably have you talk to a
dietician to plan out your meals, what they should be and when. might need to change some eating habits but it should be okay
and since youre in Canda youre lucky, pretty sure test strips for testing your sugar are covered or at least protected by high cost coverage up there <3 since theyre usually prescription
if your mom can front you for a cheap meter just until you can see the doc, though, that'd be great and would probably help a lot
i ended up getting a cheapo off eBay, strips included xD you might try looking there or on Amazon, can probably find one really cheap
Are they? I get mine no proscription but through my health insurance I can get a certain amount for "free" if I wade through paperwork.
But that's US and not Canada soooo
and...i think that's it xDD but really honey, ive been a Type 1 all my life so if you ever need to talk, i'm here, okay? i know it can be super confusing at first and hard to deal with, and it's completely
normal for you to feel bad about it
youre brave and awesome and i love you, and i'll do anything i can to help you adjust <333
sargentsnarky:
mutedtempest: You are both so incredibly awesome ;~; Thank you. RE: the coverage, I actually have no idea! You'd think I would but...yeah. No clue. It's something I'll need to talk to my doctor
blah, sorry for the typos, im using my screen reader and it makes me sound worse than usual xD
and pharmacist about, but I spoke with Taisa earlier too and he confirmed that I should be able to get something from the pharmacist for testing if I have concerns.
So this is all really comforting.
mutedtempest: Don't you worry about typos! Half the time I don't even notice them until people point them out. /o/
I actually just got a GST/HST check this afternoon! So...I might be able to afford it, depending on how much they run. :| Stupid landlord's son was apparently trying to toss out my mail when my stepdad rescued
it and brought it in to me.
oh ugh /punts him into the sea
Right???? He's the worst kind of douche :\ the kind that's nice to your face and then he pulls shit like this for no bloody reason.
I can't wait until we move out.
but yeah, if you can go talk to a pharmacist before your appointment thatd be awesome, they'll more than likely give you a free meter. might not be able to give you strips since theyre usually prescription, but
and usually meters come packaged with a set of ten or so anyway
That's good :0 Just for like, testing to get an idea and see where I stand.
Also, quinoa sounds good :3 My mom keeps wanting to make it, but nobody else besides her and I would eat it so she never does. But if it's a good alternative to stuff...
and ugh sorry, plurk is hiding stuff again but yeah, mine have always been, but that might just be my doc working with me to get them free from the manufacturer since those programs require a scrip xD
Well, I mean...as long as a glucose meter and strips doesn't cost me over $70 ._. I'll be fine
and yeah, quinoa is awesome! it tends to keep my sugar level better than most grains, but then im a brittle type 1 so. there's that xDD
oh they definitely shouldnt. actually let me look around on ebay and see if the person i got my meter and strips from is still selling them, it was super cheap
if you just do a search for prodigy meter or prodigy strips you should get a bunch of results <3 theyre the cheapest brand ive found and buying those has helped me so much
i like the fact that you dont need to put codes into the meter, those have always annoyed me xD
x_x this is all so greek to me rofl /peers at the link and reads
:T huff, I like the blue one
...mmph. these are all awesome, but I'd have to...look into shipping costs because canada.
Gonna see what the pharmacist can do before I order anything.
In the meantime I think I'm going to die of thirst x_x
Also, bookmarked those links.
I am PARCHED today. I can't seem to get enough water.
:c hm... this might sound weird but make sure you have a bit if salt if you're drinking a lot. It'll help with fluid balance and water
retention. Have some salty nuts or something as a snack maybe.
=.= this is complicated...
But mom picked up some salted soda crackers...would those be okay? I'm not sure we have nuts on hand...but I'm going to the store in a sec, I can grab something :|
Gonna check out the pharmacy. u_u
Bodies are. :C the salt thing is just because sometimes that helps
Oh yeah. Soda crackers are fine. c: it's just sometimes having a bit of salt can help with water retention and dehydration
Yeah, that does sound weird, but u_u I'll take your word for it, you guys...are far more experienced with this than I am
nope, dying is not allowed xD go get you some water, bb <3
and yeah, definitely talk to the pharmacist first! <3 thats just stuff i found when i was looking because low income doctors suuuuuuuuck xDDD
I've been drinking water all day ._. Tons of it. Snarky said maybe it's a retention prob and I may need to nom a bit of salted nuts or crackers or something.
yeah, i just saw that <3 sorry, plurks being a butt
Aaannnddd...mom just got back and said my grandfather has an extra meter. She's gonna call to see if he still HAS it.
but yeah, that could very well be! if youre going to the pharmacy you could ask them too
Plurk is always a butt. /shakes it for you`
and oh that'd be amazing if he does! <3
I'm hoping. I don't really wanna bother my granfolks about this >_< but I can't really argue free and knowing the source is reliable.
exactly <3 and i know it can feel like bothering, but if theyve got it they can help so much. they want you to be healthy and feel good, sweetie
it can be controlled pretty decently but its still a major thing <3 help is good
Nah, it's more that they'll bother ME. They're not super sensitive people? They're very helpful, but they kind of...speak their mind the way a bulldozer bulldozes down buildings. Little regard for feels.
Which...don't get me wrong, they're not awful! I'm just...not feeling up to dealing with the brusqueness?
ahhhh okay i see! <3 and yeah thats totally understandable
Never mind my family is less supportive and more, "we know everything, we're always right, don't listen to anybody else, blahblahblah" and I don't want that right now ._. I like how you guys have been!
Easygoing, helpful, informative, and not pushy.
>.< I don't like pushy. Makes me get all...defensive and huffpuffy.
Which sounds cute :T but I assure you it is not
no, i totally understand that
It's more along the lines of FERAL BEAST READY TO CHEW ON FACES
and yeah, if you can keep it between you and professionals thats always better. things are changing so fast and so much in medicine anyway, hell ive had this for 28 years now and things are totally different
But yeah, just waiting on her to call .-. she said she'd talk to him for me. I'm such a wuss, rofl.
now than they were when i was a kid
nah, youre not a wuss <3 you just dont wanna deal with added stress
which is good because stress helps to raise blood sugar and being so thirsty i bet youre running high anyway xD
Yeah...once I can be sure that yeah, that's what it is, it'll be just a MY BUSINESS kind of thing unless I really need immediate input from folk who deal with it and can't speak to my doc right away.
please promise me though, if you feel bad enough you'll go to the ER? i know it's scary and it sucks but it can be dangerous to try and ignore or wait on it <3
Just ask Taisa. I swear, he asks how I am a lot and I think my most common answer is STRESSED D:
and i know, honey. im so sorry
Oh! I don't think it's that severe, but I definitely would if it got really bad, I promise that. I mean...I'm epileptic too, and signs of seizures for ME in the past have been MASSIVE fatigue before an episode.
So if I feel like that, at the very least I'd alert somebody, whether it's brought on by epilepsy or diabetes :\
I DID NOT WANT YOU TO TELL HIM IT WAS FOR ME
ahaha mom wtf are you doing
ohwellohwellatleastsheisasking
and good <3 sorry, i know i mother hen, i just worry about you
GKDHFGDFG he doesn't have it anymore
nonono I don't mind u_u <3 like I said earlier, this plurk has made me feel a million times more comfortable than I did this morning
BUUUUT that said and my grandfather's answer reveeeaaaled, I need to run to the pharmacy. BE BACK IN A FEW.
awww, well good! and sucks that he doesnt have it, but yeah, go check! good luck lovely
They sure do have the supplies, and they sure are covered, but uncovered it's like some $80 for just the strips? -_-
So I just...have to tough it out until my appointment, I guess, and be careful of what I eat, log what I do and how I feel after, etc.
Yeah the strips are pricey cause they have little chips in them . Maybe I can send you some! You'll have to get needles your self....
yeah, that sucks
might be worth getting one of the cheapies from amazon, cant imagine shipping would be too terribly much
I'm not going to worry about it until I see my doctor. I don't want anyone going out of their way for me when it's only a possibility and not for sure.
but yay for them being covered once you get a diagnosis! that's awesome and a big stressor taken care of <333
I'm considering that, Heather, yeah. If what the pharmacist said is true, even covered it may still be cheaper to do it the Amazon way.
Even with shipping to consider.
In the meantime...I am battling one hell of a dizzy and nausea spell right now, so pardon if I get abrupt sounding. -_- Nothing personal.
oh no worries! i get grumpy as hell when my sugar's out of whack, totally understand <3 try and get some water/soda crackers and take it easy, your bodys probably working extra hard right now
i'm just more stressed out now than i was before i left you know?
i feel like not only was it a wasted trip, but like the pharmacist, even being as nice to me as she was and as familiar with me as she is, like she didn't believe me or something
so yeah, wasted trip, stuck a month without an answer because doctors here hate it when you go to urgent care and don't see your family doctor, got bitched at before about that once when i was having
oh sweetheart i'm so sorry
... /makes faces at your area doctors !!!
Since she had holding you covered then Imma get my baseball bat. I mean um...
you know though, maybe if you can go to urgent care and tell them you just want a blood test for diabetes they might be willing. if they bitch about you not seeing your family doc just be like well its a month
i know thatd be stressful too but maybe better than not knowing?
either way, im sorry honey, theyre being butts
i asked her about it and she was giving me a "gentle" stink-eye, and the clinic docs would do the same thing and i just..can't with doctors, it's not easy for me, hard enough just talking to a pharmcist
shhhh youre not an idiot honey
im so sorry it's so stressful
and im sorry theyre being idiots, they should know better. blood sugar issues arent something you just tell someone to wait on or make them feel bad for asking /rages at them
i wish i was close enough to come up there and go with you for moral support
i thnk what i'm just gonna end up doing is getting up early and callng the clinic every morning when they open to see if my family doctor has any emergency appointment spots open or cancellations
sometimes i can get in sooner doing that
sounds like a good plan, sweetie <333
and really, if there's anything i can help with, please dont hesitate to ask
you guys have all done more than i could have hoped, i'm really grateful
i just. need to calm down ro something right nw
if you wanna boomerang something silly we can do that, i can find some ridiculous meme or something <3
i can barely see lol XD had to take my glasses off i was crying so much. but idk...maybe. that or i'll watch t&b or pacrim. ariel rec'd it to me and i have yet to watch it.
my head's still spinning too
just take it easy, sweetheart, and let me know if i can do anything
mom ate the rest of my tuna and cucumber
and i havent seen pacrim yet either, been meaning to xD
i hear pacrim's really good .-.
I forget how blind I am without my glasses sometimes
But I'm really hungry now...so i'm gonna try and find something for dinner if mom has no idea what's she's making. Maybe that'll help settle me down some, too.
ahaha so do i, and then i go to try to put my contact in and i run into walls xDD
noooo /wraps pillows around you
ahaha it's okay! im a klutz and have a really high pain tolerance so im super used to it xD and yay, foods <3
booo no foods mom has no idea what she's making /)_(\ fml
just be like "woman i need noms get out the way"
