So while listening to it, I have been thinking about the theory that Cecil is an Elder God who has lost memory of his identity.
I really love that theory! But there are moments in the series which I feel negate it:
(mostly moments where he experiences extreme supernatural and life-changing events in the same manner as other Night Vale citizens)
Firsly, in Sandstorm, which was an amazing two-part episode, he did meet his cross-dimensional double. Since the eldergods exist on all dimensions, I don't think Cecil would have had a double.
Secondly, when riding the Subway, Cecil went through, as the other Nightvale citizens did, knowledge and time experienced at once, for years. But he didn't face the knowledge of being an Elder God.
There may be a couple of reasons for the latter issue, even if he were an Elder God:
1) The subway may have been some sort of dimension into his own mind, built by the deer-headed people to edge him to remember who he was. And he simply didn't ride the subway long enough to gain that informatio
This would also explain why others who rode the Subway came out as lifeless husks, and Cecil did not.
2) actually, I kinda already said #2 above without separating it into a differnet category.
Things to support Cecil being an Elder God:
1) Carlos. Everyone in Night Vale was enamored by him upon arrival. Initially I just assumed that it was because he was an outsider, coming into Night Vale
but he has other scientists with him who were also outsiders. It may be that Cecil's strong feelings of attraction for Carlos influenced the feelings of the rest of the community.
2) He always agrees with the bans of the council, and many of them seem like they are for the benefit of not spreading knowlege. Knowlege which perhaps may lead to Cecil finding out who he is.
(This is a stretch, as there are plenty of theoretical reasons for a governing agency to want to withhold knowlege from people. But, I mean, it's not just some knowlege in this case)
Cecil being responsible for the nature of the librarians could also be a subconsious defense mechanism to prevent people from researching the truth.
Oh wait! Another piece of evidence that Cecil is NOT an Elder God : He is physically harmed when he faces barriers of dimensional rifts (to do with the Dog Park)
For instance, his phone cuts him or burns him when he tries to call Dana. (also, guys, Dana is so cute!!!)
Ok, back to evidence that Cecil may be an Elder God :
3) The Story of You. a.k.a. My favorite episode!!!
4) The "Apache" tracker, who Cecil said seemed to him to be of Slavic origin, and who he was disgusted by for wearing a racist headress was transformed into an actual Native American who spoke only Russian
(missing grammar in #4. Sorry.)
Got any more theories? Comments? Just wanna say "hi"? Just reply to this plurk.
