story idea stuff: Is there a way to combine a scarification ritual with a tattoo? Like they wound you for the scar then cover it in pigment, so the scar will have a color?

IIRC there was a tribe somewhere in the world that actually makes "scar tattoos" as a rite of passage. I forget if they use pigments, though.
