Both of them are exactly the same. :| I enjoy playing it though.

You don't have to button mash with that game. It's easy to do things in it.

Press Y/Triangle a couple of times to ready your special attack, and then press the attack button while you're glowing to do your signature technique.

When you're wounded enough, your character will have the ability to do their awakening mode. I think you press L2/Left Trigger to do it.

Awakening mode differs from each character. Kakashi raises up his headband, Naruto becomes the ninetails thing, etc.

But each awakening mode essentially does the same thing: it beefs your attack because you're close to death.
