got a work e-mail today, I can understand using memorial service instead of funeral, but "home going" ceremony?

I have. It's a cultural thing. Mostly within the African American community. The individual is being called home to God.

I had never heard it either until about two or three years ago. The mother of one of my coworkers died and they held a home going ceremony for her.

It's much more of a celebration of life and celebration of passing on than funerals or memorials I've attended.
