the more I hear of Georgia, the more it sounds like a disgusting place to live in
I'm a Texan, I thought my state was supposed to hold the record for ass-backwardness
Cannot possibly be legal?
the petition is sort of misleading
apparently the schools in question banning lgbtq students (or ones that act like it) are private/religious schools
so yeah, it's disgusting, but I sort of think it should be phrased... like... I don't know, cut this funding
Anduin: They are private schools that receive state funding.
It shouldn't be legal because they are receiving state funding.
Not just homosexual students, but also the children of homosexual couples.
right, and that's the problem that the petition should be addressing, but from what it looks like, all the petition says is very sparse
basically a rhetorical question
because of course schools receiving govt funding shouldn't be allowed to do that, but all it asks is "Do you think gay or lesbian students should be expelled from publicly-funded schools for who they are?"
I just think it'd be more to the point if it actually mentioned the solution
Basically, if a private school wants to do this, it should not be getting funds from the states.
I think the point is very clear. State funded schools are discriminating and banning students. The fact they are registered as private schools is a stupid loophole
The petition is that Georgia needs to stop giving them support.
Instead of trying to add more to the program.
I live here in GA and this is the first time of me hearing about this
oh it's the private schools
but yeah this is still really freaking bad
if you get state money you can't be discriminatory like this
Basically from the NYT article it looks like a bullshit workaround: people get tax deductions for giving money to a fund that provides scholarships to attend private schools
So it might not technically be public money... it sounds like it'd be a nasty question legally.
In terms of actual justice, though, fuck yes any school that's getting scholarship money sponsored by state programs shouldn't be discriminating.
tinwateringcan: Yeah, a very stupid loop hole that was brought to light and hopefully gets fixed.
That bit about a teacher being fired from one of these schools for supporting her OWN SON after he came out -- that's pretty awful.
that is INCREDIBLY fucked up.
they're kids, and their parents are paying you to teach them
only something really serious, like breaking the law, should be grounds for expulsion.
I am so ashamed to live here sometimes
I promise you, not everyone here is this ignorant and thickheaded
Georgia and Arizona are racing very hard to be the most fucked up state in the US. ...part of me hopes they are even bothering to use loopholes.
Because honestly I can see the representative politicians just NOT GIVING A SHIT. Which is slightly more depressing.
I'm still sorta embarrassed to live next to Arizona, but at the same time, so fucking glad we aren't them
I am so fucking ashamed of my state. Can't wait to get the fuck out of here.
if only we could get rid of one of our senators, it'd be perfect
I'd say GA and AZ are competing for second place behind Mississippi
Yeah, don't even get me started.
Reading our local news facebook is like fingernails on chalkboard.
Go go Georgia. Home of the ignorant, undereducated, and willfully stupid.
stay classy Georgia
I agree with those who have said the statement is misleading. The issue is about private religious schools that ban glbt students getting state funding, not about GLBT youth being banned from public schools.
I agree it's disgusting but churches and private institutions can be just as bigoted and disgusting as they want to be,
But, while the statement is completely misleading, I 100% agree that if they are going to ban students they should NOT get state funding.
