-sen is a modern addition to a surname, which used to be -son (at least in Norwegian, and still in Icelandic). It means "son of Christian" for example, if the father was named Christian.
And I don't see who they'd imagine being "son of", unless it's one of the first Kings or something.
for girls it was -dottír , so Nielsdottír.
I've also seen the name Niels used for Norway, though that's strictly Danish orz Nils is the Norwegian version if you so want it, author.
