Considering batt life,HD space, CD/DVD drive, processing power I'd go for notebook. Asus runs great with linux and the other OS been using mine for 5 years now...

Define "basic" For office apps, email and internet, a netbook would be fine. In any case, always check out if you would be comfortable using the keyboard and the trackpad.
