Jeans are quite steampunk albeit working class steampunk.

Right. The period they were invented in falls in line with steampunk nicely. Harder to stuff into high boots though.

I think they felt silly mostly because of everyone else dressed in "finery". Someone made the joke that they "Just got off of work" even.
