but what sucks is that even though i'm bisexual, I still can't say anything. there have been threats of beating anyone who came out today
and i cant do anything because they're all of higher rank than me, and i dont know who to go to. even if things did get taken care of, I
can't change anyones mind and in the long run, nothing would really get done positively if i came out to them afterwards, they'd know it was
me. so here i sit, unable to do shit about anything, in fear of getting the shit beat out of me by my co-workers.
i'm so sorry to hear about that
that is truly disgusting and sad
it really is, ive seen people say that their children and they will not serve anymore because they dont want to wear a uniform
associated with openly gay servicemembers
Just making it okay on paper doesn't mean it'll change anyone's attitudes, which a lot of people don't realise.
As you have obviously found out.
Depending on branch (and I won't ask which for obvious reasons), I'm not entirely surprised. It's a long uphill battle.
I'm sorry you faced this.
Im not surprised either, raised in a military family i only know of a few that would be ok with the concept of gays/bis/lesbians in the mili
Ugh, that's so horrible. I'm sorry
that fucking sucks.
would come out anyway. Let them beat me. At least I'm being who I am. But I don't want you getting hrut
Poke_chan: Easy for you to say in your position, honestly.
Usually I am all for the "own who you are and fuck 'em" attitude, but in the military it's a different thing.
Because you can get fucked over-- and not just physically-- if the people above you don't like you.
OP, I am so sorry to hear that you'll have to be struggling with this.
I wish you the very best, whatever your ultimate path may be.
....has anyone else ever watched Soldier's Girl and cried their eyes out?
the military is not the safest place to be yourself
yeah... ryssa, no disrespect but Frank and Nella hit the nail on the head here. very easy for you to say something like that unless you know
what situation the OP is actually in and can sympathize with that. it's a bit different looking in from the outside.
the military is a vicious place on the inside.... here i'll show you some satire that accurately explains the BS I deal with.
mind you, i think this guy is a shitbag, but a lot of this stuff does happen.
I wouldn't for a second say it was the worst branch. This just may be my upbringing, having been raised by two Marines. I will say however
that it is not one of the most tolerant branches, for sure.
Whoops, caught me fixing a typo.
Well, that's debatable, definitely.
It's not the homophobia Olympics, anyway.
(My comment that I deleted because I wanted to rephrase it was that I thought the Marines were the worst branch for it).
ah! ok ok
Nowhere can be considered safe, that's for sure. But honestly, it can be very much like that in the civilian world, too.
It's just very much more concentrated in the military because of its history as a masculinity-dominated space.
of course.. the first female Marine was Opha Mae Johnson in 1918. The Marine Corps having been founded in 1775 just shows how 'manly' the
military was viewed to be to begin with... then the women came in, and doors started opening up.
Yeah, how many times have I heard that the Marines are the 'men's department' of the Navy...
Doors are opening, but a lot of them are still closed.
lmao, i've even said that a few times to my navy buddy. maybe this will help open many more doors.
Hah, you a Marine yourself, then?
I'm Navy, so I'm obliged to give you side eye... but not too much.
very sorry that you're in that situation.
it's to be expected. same thing with civil rights. it's still a battle.
Yeah. Not one that's going to ever end.
wouldn't say that. just not in our lifetimes.
I think people will always find a new thing to hate each other over...
