might want to consider the Amazon Kindle if it's just for reading ebooks.

i have ruled out the Kindle due to the reported awkward side buttons and also the proprietary format

I do want the other features of a PDA but nothing super duper. in the $300 range

I use my Tungston T5 to read e-books, but last I heard palm wasn't making new palm pilots so only other thing I know of are the phonecombos

Hubby just got himself the newest blackberry but slight hiccup for ebooks as they're still working on the mobireader for it
