usually i vary the hues for shading a little so the highlights are warmer and the shadows are cooler...

highlights are usually more saturated too, and shadows less so

and then i try to unify the palette so that no one area seems too monochromatic/different from the rest...

like in this pic, i added some blue to her hair so the scarf wouldn't seem out of place
