I spent most of last night refreshing mkini's running coverage
The Bersih rally gathered people in the tens of thousands. They were met on several occasions with tear gas and water canons
UMNO's Youth's counter rally was separated from the Bersih rally, and had an approximate attendance of 500. For the greater majority
of their gathering, they had no police response to the gathering, as reported by NST. They moved approximately 200m, were met by police
Tear gas was used on the crowd, the leader arrested, and then dispursed slowly, eventually hit by water cannon as well
Perkasa has relatively little to no visible presence with the only report of a gathering of 20 watching tv coverage of the rally
Bersih rally gathered despite a massive roadblock, checkpoints at railways and bus lines, and mass arrests.
Arrests of the day totaled over 1000 and few involved unruly behavior beyond simply gathering.
Most arrested are being released today in batches, including leadership of both groups who rallied
At least one video now is floating around of police brutality, but many pictures of inspiration, including the almost unfathomable mass of
people gathered. Little too no destruction of propery, and one friend at the rally said most groups were picking up liter after themselves
Situations became more tense and police action faster as the day wore on, with some of the most retold being outside of the hospital where
NST and mkini both report to police shooting at least one volly of gas/smoke grenades into the building itself.
The police have rigorously denied this, as well as stated there were only two places where tear gas was used.
Their estimates of the rally is also only in the range of 6000, a gross underestimation by most sources
They have made no comment as to police brutality
A very small group (20) made their way to the palace after the rally to deliver their memo, and have stated that in the meeting with Agong
they were told that he would receive that memorandum from them. They were stopped and sent away by police short of being able to approach.
National media particularly highlights the use of tear gas and the mass arrests conducted, as well as the general disruption to the city as
Generally transparent, though screening of user comments was mentioned within the article itself. Reporters on it were in the rally itself
(as a personal opinion that is strictly my own, either allow comments or do not allow any at all and report strictly news)
However, reporting there seems very open from the reporters.
NST is government affliated, and Mkini is bersih biased, though both are moderate sources for their respective sides.
I assume something between the two reports is the accurate view.
I will have more articles, pictures and video later, and hopefully some accounts. #bersihstories on twitter is currently trending and many
accounts and stories shared there are interesting and inspiring in the mean time.
