OK, now, I'm trying to figure this out, if my plurks are public, can somoen come along and 'promote' and it goes to the front page?

yes. A lot of us have turned off the promote option.
yes and google will also index your plurks

I, too, get a large number of sales from plurk with a private timeline. 
you know what, every single item sold in my bunny butt sale has been from plurk and i advertised it everywhere!
