My friend said there was another rule about words that begin with a vowel and mon, but I had not heard of it before.

Yes, it would be "mon amie" unless you are talking about boy then it would be "mon ami" since amie starts with a vowel =)

Ah well really it could be m'amie since it should be ma amie but it is older french and already in place in our language.

But to answer yes no vowels should be next to each other so they either go together or change to masculine. It is a bit confuse.
