I had my 3rd graders make a diorama of their favorite animal. They did them at home-so they had unlimited materials.

Then I took pictures of them with the dioramas and pasted them onto sheets with fake news clippings and sent them home.

I had 9th graders build "boomwhackers" out of PVC pipes in a unit on sound waves and we played silly childrens music all afternoon.

It is hard to impress a 9th grader but London Bridge and Mary Had a Little Lamb on plastic pipes will do it.
