i think each panel was 50 and with 4 sts on either side for the garter st border that makes 108

so you knit 6 or 8 rows for some garter bottom edge, then knit 4 border stitches on either side of 50 knits and 50 purls. then work the

panels in stockinette 'til you're almost halfway through your yarn, then switch the panels.
end with 6 or 8 rows of garter.

I casted on all 126 called for in the book and thought it looked a bit big

definitely. the book uses doubled fingering weight, which isn't probably even worsted!

yep! you could probably get away with even a little less, but it should be lovely at 108.

i like the symmetry of 50x50 blocks and 4 stitches for the boarder
