i really use them completely differently... plurk seems more like chat... twitter more like the status bar on facebook

The good thing about twitter is all those clients for it. Tweetdeck for example is a pretty cool app. There still isn't a client for plurk.

There are dozens. About one hundred I'd guess. Tweetdeck is the most advanced, tweetdeck.com , makes Twitter a whole new experience
