Actually found a workaround: put the tower in open heart surgery mode, and stick the detached DVD drive to the side, Orky-style.
That stomps the bad USB connections outta the equation! WAAAGH!
Maybe you should just transplant the hard drive to a healthier rig?
No such rig exists at the moment, unfortunately. On the flip side, it sorta fulfills my McGyver fantasies...
