I want to get a Mac notebook, but I don't want to drag around a big screen.. so a small one would do, but I want to have large screens
at home and the office with what could be the equivalent of a docking station so I don't plug/unplug keyboards, mice and printers/scanners.
I want a notebook with a very fast CUP and lots of memory and the rest I rather have external.
I've found myself comfy with a mobile 13" screen, but at home and the office where I spend most of my reading/writing time, I need
large screens and likely two of them side by side.
I want central storage at home which I would see via the net and sync with from the office just in case my notebook gets stolen or damaged.
My data is business critical and is small generally in storage requirements, but needs to be safe and encrypted.
I've found solutions here and there for the centralized storage and encryption on the Windows side, but I'm sure they're quite advanced
on the Apple side of the fence and well integrated.
My mail I have migrated to Google Apps and I use the web for my notebook access and IMAP for my mobile (Nokia e71) access. Not interested
in an iPhone.. at least not up to now
thats the dream of every computer geek (including me) your solution is to get iMac 20" at home + Macbook pro at the office & a Macbook 4 fun
What do you propose I should be looking at?
get a Macbook Black 13" top of the line and use it as amain notebook
A pro? How small are their screens?
at the office I recommends a top of the line iMac 24" or if you need 2 monitors I will go for the 20" and add an external monitor to it.
BTW you can access your notebook easily from your iMac using screen sharing
I was thinking of keeping all the processing on the notebook at the office and only use two external screens.. at home an iMac 24".
that's what I do here, use the 24" with 4 different desktops open and connect to my Macbook pro via screen sharing
the Macbook Pro comes with 15" and 17"
What about the dockingstation issues? I don't want to plug in tons of stuff and unplug them in when I go to the offfice and again when I
The pro has too big of a screen to drag around. 15 is too much for me on the road, I think I'll go with the 2.4ghz MacBook Black suggestion.
I'll also get two large screens for the office and an iMac + screen home.
Still pending is how to resolve the issue of keyboard, mice, printers, scanners and external accessories and their connection hassles?
I don't like using port replicators and Apple did not release a docking system for the notebooks
Thanks! That price looks good.. a bit pricey on the 2gb extra memory for +$200?
I recommands you get two iMacs one for the office and one for home and add additional screen where you need it and get a mac Air for
you don't need docking station with the Mac. you can use the screen sharing andit works fine for me
Apple charge extra for the memory but you can get it from the net for a very good price
I'm suffering on my Vista notebook, CUP is crunching keeping up with web site content.. even typing here I see the text in a second after
on 14th of October Apple might release new Macbook Pros that you might like to check out before youget this one.
Not in a hurry, post October action. But the pro will never go below the 15" mark on the screens I'm assuming?
Yeah a friend of mine got the same memory from
memoryx.net for $80, even with the shipping it was almost half and got memory for his other
So no solution for the connections/cables hassle?
some 3rd party option are available for port replication but I don't like them. I don't think you need them anymore in this Wireless World
the 24" monitor of the iMac is more than enough unless you have some requirement for another screen
and with the option of having more than one desktop at the same time ( I have 4 here) no need for 2nd screen
Umm.. Yes.. I might just get a wireless keyboard and mouse, that solves those, the printer I think would be connected to the Access Point.
The scanner might be connectible to the access point as well I think.
you can open different application in different desktop and easily switch between them
most new HP printers now comes with a wireless option
Nice! I guess now all I need to do is budget this and think about the central external storage and minimize the internal storage on
buy HP printer with built in scanner and you can use it wirelessly too, this is what I use here
also get a MacMini for the TV stuff we spoke of Zamil and connect it to the central storage.
Saw the Samsungs multifunctions on the Apple store. Found them locally as well. Thinking of which way I want to go, ink or laser.
What about the centralized storage? I forgot what I was looking at previously, it was robot something..
for home use go for the HP-multifunction printer and buy it locally make sure you buy the one with wireless option
I'll check out printers and their ink soon.
Just found the storage.. Drobo.
Drobo is very nice solution to all this and scalable too. highly recommended
to sum this up here is what I recommend:
I'm going to then keep it in mind for the central storage solution.
With Time Machine, I'll be safe Inshallah.
for home: iMac 20" with HP Printer and Apple time capsule
If I use time capsule, I won't get anything else as I would sync my office work to it over the net.
Office: Imac 24", Drobo and a Laser printer with built in scanner
If I get Drobo, I won't get time capsule. Right? Why spend twice when they're reachable even when I'm mobile on 3g?
you can't sync from the office to home Time capsule remotely
Built in on the Mac and not hackable or do I need a third party?
you can go for an account with dropbox for 50GB it cost you $100 per year and it comes with a very nice software that works Mac, Pc & linux
I did not use it so I can't give you a good advice on it
Oh dropbox are not beta anymore?!
Been a while since I went to their web site.
dropbox will sync your data all the time and keep track of changes too. this way you have access to your data everywhere
Did they have encryption options or would I need to still maintain virtual encrypted directories within the sync'd drive?
don't know need to check on that. I don't have that much sensitive data so I don't care about it much
I had normal data and sensitive data which I password protected, but when my computer got stolen, the password protection was unlocked
from the looks of it with password recovery tools.
Don't like the risk.. want this stuff to be seamless and thought out from day one in the infrastructure.
I'll be back.. getting something done.
Thanks Zamil!
iPod old, not-available anymore Hi-Fi?
