I've seen this name floating around since I was a kid and always went "I'm going to watch this one day!"
and never got around to it but NOW I HAVE THIS OFF THE CHECKLIST
Late 90s-Early 00s anime just hits different. It's funny that we live in a time where we want this era back, but the sad fact is that A) it will never come back and B) people have been making remakes but it will never recapture that same magic of back then.
HELL YEAH, that opening is such a fuckin banger
Not to mention, Japan was going through A LOT back then. The economy bubble popping, fear and anxiety into a new era, lots of doomday cults and what not

as a 90s VHS direct market buyer, calling Nadesico a "hidden gem" feels like a punch in the gut
It's no wonder why a lot of anime had the characters be super gloomy and introspective and you had a lot of world reset plots

it was one of the biggest series around in the US market........ once....................
I'm happy I watched it now since I've seen so much anime and absorbed a lot of weeb culture that I appericate the hidden references and comedic bits so much more
THE CHARACTERS WERE SO FUN
I also watched the movie and regret it but it was pretty to look at!
and read up about that Sega Saturn game that was a prequel to it and I'm still going "what"
infel: It hits so much harder as you go through the show
mugennoken: I would always see this on the shelves but never got around to watching it
A shame that we never got the movie trilogy... This series deserved to be so much bigger
this was one of those series that had a big popularity boom back then but it was all about timing. these days it IS a hidden gem compared to some other titles from the same time period
I remember watching the first few episodes a long time ago during Anime Club but never got further than that
(I remember nothing of the content itself, only that it was known at the time we watched it that it was a Big Deal)
This was def. one of those titles that faded into obscurity over time
kinda like how Outlaw Star is somewhat obscure now but was a Big Deal for a certain time?
This was a name I've seen often next to Evangelion and I think ADV dubbed it too
(with Vision of Escaflowne as the big deal title that people STILL highly remember and look back to more by comparison)
inthetatras: YEAH... Outlaw Star was a Big Damn Deal back in the day. I still remember that airing on Toonami even now
Same for Escaflowne... Though weirdly enough, they actually aired that on Fox Kids somehow
I cannot remember how much they edited it down, but I def. remember watching the original version in full way later
I still remember that they would have edited VHS tapes and uncut VHS tapes for certain anime
calling nadesico a hidden gem dealt me physical damage
Shame its legacy faded into darkness
