petty, petty, petty peeve time:
There is someone in one of the local free groups asking for people who have a tree come down to "save the lumber for building housing", and a while ago they asked a landscaper to save branches from a conifer for lumber for building projects- branches that were no more than 4 inches in diameter and curved like a bow.
And, I just, I mean, really, do you think turning a tree into lumber is free? You think this is like minecraft, where you just hit a tree enough times and it splits itself in to craft-able materials? Do you think you can take a branch that's 4 inches wide and curved like base of a rocking horse and make a 2x4 suitable for building a house?
Is that the world you live in? Is it?
Do you think this happens for free? Do you have any idea how much money it costs to get a straight, solid log turned into rough lumber? Much less the cost of the other steps to turn it into usable lumber? Did you know you have to dry them carefully to prevent warping?
Do you have any idea what you're asking for?
Or, do you think people should spend a butt load of money and then just give away the timber?
Further, do you think people are just cutting down trees in town willy-nilly? Like, people are cutting down healthy trees that would make good lumber? Like, no. Most trees are getting taken down because they are unhealthy and a hazard- which means they won't make good lumber. Because they're rotting.
This is the city. The city that requires you maintain a certain amount of tree units per acre. No one is cutting down perfectly good trees.
There's a fucking reason why most of the time the wood ends up being given away for free, or the arborists "get rid" of it: It takes a lot of effort to turn a log into lumber. Heck, it takes a lot of effort to turn a log into burnable, fireplace ready firewood. That's why firewood costs money. Lumber costs more.
It just grinds my gears that some people apparently devalue working class skills so much that they think they should get hundreds of dollars worth of work done for free. Just handed to them on a silver plater. Probably expect all that lumber to be delivered to them for free, too.
I think it's the trust-fund anarchists that are playing at being poor and expecting working class people to just, give them stuff
honestly, I kind of feel like you should give them this rant.
like, maybe start with a gentle "that's not building quality wood" and if they push back: Rant Time
I might. I asked them if they had the means to turn logs into lumber and wanted raw logs and they have not replied, so maybe they'll figure it out on their own
very, very grumpy
that;s fair and valid tbh
nope, they're uh, uniformed?
they think home depot can do it
*uninformed not uniformed
