what is festivus?

An alternative, secular holiday created in opposition to the commercialism of Christmas

The it was made more well-known, though still not widely celebrated, as far as I know (or at least not seriously; I’m sure there are plenty of people who find it funny and acknowledge it for giggles like I do), when there was an ++

episode of Seinfeld about it
The episode added new traditions to add to the humor, though its roots in opposing Christmas tradition remained

In the show, it was created by Frank Costanza, the father of George Costanza, one of the main characters
All the background you need is that Frank is... a deeply unpleasant person XD
And his traditions included the “airing of grievances,” which took place during the Festivus dinner
In which everyone goes around the table and tells everyone else all the ++

ways they’ve irritated them over the past year
And then there’s the Festivus feats of strength
Where somebody has to have a wrestling match with the head of the household
And Festivus is not over until the head of the household is pinned

In place of a Christmas tree, there is an aluminum pole
Because it requires no decoration and Frank “finds tinsel distracting” XD

I believe the son of the man who created the holiday wrote the episode of Seinfeld, so even though those traditions are fictional and meant to be funny, they were created by one of the original people behind the holiday

Anyway it’s a fun little holiday to reject commercialism and maybe nail a clock to the wall or wrestle your loved ones
