You don't have an option mid-procedure. Either the surgeon has to short cut their work, or you get a larger-than-expected bill.

I thought of it in terms of my cancer surgery. Besides the tumor, there were calcifications in the tissue that needed to be removed. My surgeon removed a portion and then waited while the margins were checked. It took at least 2-3 checks to make sure she got all of it.

If there was a time limit on my procedure, she would have to make a best guess, taking more than necessary, and hoping that they got it all.
