Somehow in the car, conversation between me and my dad got to ducks. Being a retired hunter, he shared duck facts and asked me what the "two kinds of ducks were"
Mom used to call me her little "puddle duck," and i have never heard the term outside of calling a child in Wellingtons as such. I cracked up. I told him to cut the crap
Cut to two New Yorkers in a car, each calling the other one full of shit and aggressively insisting their duck terminology is legit and the other's is poppycock
He's never heard of dabbling, despite my best effort to jog his memory by shaking my own head back and forth as if i was using my bill to blubblubblub the surface of a pond
He insists puddle ducks are what they call typical ducks that stay on the surface of bodies of water, like your mallards. Your other kinds are sea ducks
What the fuck is a puddle duck, has anyone else ever heard of this, are the two duck types puddle/sea or dabble/dive, and why are things like this important to people?
