This is the natural shade of this box mix red velvet cake.
It STAINED MY FINGERS if I got batter on them. Water-soluable dye tho
the house smells like cake... <3
CAKE
omg for a split second I thought that was meatloaf
I PLAY WAY TOO MANY EFFED UP THINGS
what kind of icing is that?
Is that a chocolate buttercream?
I used to eat that stuff out of the tin
OHH love red velvet 😳 looks yummy!!! And the frosting 😳😳😳
I have chosen only to lather my own slices/cupcakes in frosting since first younger bro likes to watch his sugar intake for his health. <3
but that red color is definitely worth admiring!
/whines about historical red velvet cake and modern recipe-inaccuracies, lol
but seriously, it looks gorgeous. I hope it's as delicious as it looks!
If I recall, it was originally beets that gave it its color?
no, not at all. it was the cocoa.
today, we use "dutched", or alkalized cocoa: it's been given something to counteract acid's effects on it -- which is to say, breaking it down into something brilliantly, gorgeously RED.
originally, chocolate cake... was simply RED. because of the acidic ingredients that'd interact with the leavening agents.
it was only when cocoa commonly became alkalized that chocolate cake was brown, like chocolate itself. that's when people started messing with recipes to recreate the red look because they apparently didn't remember what caused it in the first place.
the old recipes still exist, though -- and it's now possible again to get cocoa powder that isn't dutched, if you're curious to try that. but it's just chocolate cake.... that's ruby red on its own, no food coloring needed!
I mean, beetjuice is true too but it was a wartime thing when chocolate was scarce
They had a lot of things they did during that time to make up for scarcity
Like potato cake or peanut butter bread
I apologize ahead of time that I might forget this knowledge, but I will remember how excited I was to read it!
...I completely spaced that, tbh.
reminds me of oatmeal pie which is freaking delicious
it's a cheap faux-pecan pie sans pecans, lol
Oatmeal pie sounds so good 😳😳
I'd have to poke my dad for where he keeps his version of the recipe, but after a quick google, this one should work well, I think?
INGREDIENTS
1 1/4 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup oats
1/2 cup sugar
3/4 cup milk
3 eggs, beaten
3 TBS unsalted butter, softened
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp salt
1 unbaked pie shell
INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat the oven to 350°.
Mix the dry ingredients. Stir.
Add in the wet ingredients. Stir.
Add salt.
Pour into unbaked pie shell.
Bake for 45-50 minutes.
Oh!!!! Thank you so much!!! That sounds so tasty 😳 I’ll give it a try!
it's somewhere between a giant (soft, gooey) oatmeal cookie, and a pecan pie (sans pecans, obviously) and it's freaking delicious.
maybe add a bit of cinnamon to it, too? hmmm
I'll poke my dad for his recipe of it later
ping me in six hours if I haven't posted it yet
I return victorious!

...we only ever have butter here at our house, and I think we all know where some of these things can be fudged a bit. but. there you have it, that's the recipe as written down by... my great-grandmother.
Hell yeah!!!! Thank you so much for getting that for me 😊 mmm, coconut!!
no prob! I'd love to hear the results, if anyone tries making it!
