I got through getting the lyrium dagger last night and I'm enjoying it well enough but one thing was kind of bugging me and I think I figured it out: a lot of these characters seem aware they are in a video game

Some of it's in the phrasing of lines, some of it's how they are patting my ass about my good positioning in a fight or whatever (as if they know I am The Protagonist), but it's just kind of a pervading sense that they can see slightly beyond the fourth wall

It's not game-ruining, but it is a very different feel from say Inquisition, where characters clearly did NOT know they were in a video game or they would have figured out Solas was Fen'Harel before the end of Trespasser lmao

Does anyone else feel this way?

I think the encouragement is nice but I think it happens too quickly; everyone becomes buddy-buddy (with some exceptions) so fast that there's no real organic feeling of slowly building up trust in the fighting sense you're talking about

It's not actually that different from a lot of video games but it is different from past dragon ages so it sticks out to me more

also to track my big character decisions, I let the mayor sit and spin in his monster cage solely because the voice actor did not sound very sincere when he was trying to sell the "I was mentally manipulated and could not possibly have resisted" thing

if he'd sounded more believable I would have freed him because I always play characters who are at least a little bleeding heart on my first run

but since I am going in unspoiled, I just couldn't buy it. He sounded fake. Possibly this will bite me in the ass later but I'm prepared.

In updated companion ratings, Emmrich and Taash are quickly becoming faves and Davrin is all right on his own but jumps an entire letter grade when in Single Dad Grey Warden mode

I'm kinda hmmm on Taash's gender identity storyline so far. Love her, no beef with the actual plot, wish the first codex on the subject didn't sound so incredibly imported from modern day Earth.

That said, this sort of thing does not happen in AAA video games much if ever so you know what, if the price is the writing not being as tight as I'd like, that's fine.

I sprinted to the fire + ice quest bc I heard I can lock in Lucanis afterward so I'm gonna be leisurely with side quests for a while but goddamn that fight was rough

I couldn't pick one fire and one ice companion bc Neve won't use fucking healing spells anymore and Taash doesn't have any so I couldn't minmax resistances. I actually went back to a previous save time to bulk up a lot of my gear at the caretaker's and went back bc I was dying so much.

And I STILL barely dragged my ass to the third stage of the fights. Have never been so happy to see the Crows. Wanna kiss Viago now instead of Lucanis.
