Are you familiar with the so-called "Murphy's Law"? It says that if bad things are possible, it will happen.
It's a pessimistic take, and a more pessimistic version of "Yeah, bad things happen all the time. Not necessarily to the same person, but at any point in time, someone in the world had something bad happen to them." The latter is my own personal take on it. It's my personal elaboration of the concept of "bad luck".
It might not have happened for a reason (good or bad) but yeah~ sometimes bad things happen. Character is how we react to that "bad luck".
Of course no one should speak of "curses" over you.
