“Good evening!” Koji’s greeting boomed suddenly as Mitsuru ascended the stairs.
“Oh hi. It’s been a while since we last met.” Mitsuru spun around to answer the abrupt voice.
“Your sister said the meal is already.”
“You’ve lost your weight, haven't you?” Mitsuru said, crossed his arms, regarded Koji.
“Hmm…recently people tell me that often, but in fact I've gained five kilograms in this half year.” He pinched his spare tire several times with his fingers and continued. “It’s a freak thing when you’ve gained your weight but people keep telling you you’re lost weight. ”
“Then if you really lost your weight, what would happen?” Mitsuru quipped.
“But today, you see…it’s sukiyaki day! I’ll gorge a lot of meat so that is ok!” He said it out loud with a merry sound.
“Why? Why is sukiyaki?” Mitsuru blazed in an instant.
“Hmm…?” Koji startled and tried to grope some words from his throat. “It…It’s because Ayako bought prime sliced beef.” He squeezed a smile hardly.
“I won’t eat that.” Mitsuru was dismayed then slumped onto the stairs slowly.
Koji frowned and lost. “You don’t like beef?”
“No. The problem is sukiyaki.” He answered and looked into the distance with dull eyes. It seemed he almost lost all his strength.
“People who hate sukiyaki really exist? I didn't consider that before.”
Mitsuru’s spirit came back to him. “You don’t think that is the wrong way to cook meat?”
Koji slanted his eyes quickly to the right side where kitchen and Ayako were, then up the stairs with silent feet and sat down at Mitsuru’s side. “What's wrong with sukiyaki?” He asked with a low sound, scared Ayako would hear their conversation.
“You don’t know why?”
“I never think about that question. ”
Mitsuru fixed on Koji's face with serious eyes. “If so, it’s time to ponder on it deeply. If there are three ways to cook prime sliced beef, sukiyaki, roast meat, shabu-shabu, and you can choose your favorite way to eat them, will you choose sukiyaki?”
He lifted his fingers one by one when he mentioned the different cooking ways, and especially swayed one finger fiercely as he talked about sukiyaki.
Koji grimaced, his face full of confusion. “I might choose the way based on my body condition…?”
Mitsuru putted in as quickly as he could. “Body condition, weather, world situation all doesn’t matter. Sukiyaki should be exiled from the options.”
“That's just a matter of personal preference.” Koji laughed with a wry smile.
“Prime ingredients don't need to be processed too much.” Mitsuru pushed on. “Have you ever seen a beautiful person put on heavy makeup?”
“I’ve seen it once in Nagoya.”
“And what did you think at first when you saw it?”
“It’s too wasteful.” Koji said and shocked, swirled his head and landed his eyes on Mitsuru’s.
“You got it! It’s the same! Prime beef doesn't require other spices. Sukiyaki is a dish that puts the beef into a dark sauce. It is already so crazy, but they even dipped eggs after that horrible darkness.”
“Eggs…!” Koji bobbed his head as if he understood.
“What are you doing now?” Ayako’s tough voice boomed from the kitchen and cut right through them. Then she held a plate full of ingredients, strode with quick pace toward the foot of the stairs.
Koji stood immediately as he heard and got sight of Ayako.
“Get down the stairs quickly.” Ayako urged them.
But Mitsuru just leaned his body back and supported the weight of his body with his elbow then said. “You intend to plague me, aren’t you?” His attitude was so arrogant.
“What?” Ayako was confused.
“You know I hate sukiyaki, so you prepare it on purpose.”
“I don’t know that.”
“You’re a liar! How many times have you seen me bristle because mom prepared sukiyaki?”
“You’re telling a story from a hundred years ago?”
Fusae, who was siblings’ mom, charged out from the kitchen quickly, to quench the fire between them. “Sorry, I forgot Mitsuru doesn’t like sukiyaki.” She said with a delighted tone.
“Why are you telling a lie so plain?” Mitsuru used a suspicious sight to weigh her mother.
“I didn’t lie about it.” Her crow's-feet appeared as she smiled.
“You also want to eat sukiyaki so you didn’t object to Ayako, right?”
“I just really forgot.”
“If so, you should take a health check. Recently, you forgot too many things.”
“You’re right. Just now, I even forgot my eggs and left them at the shop.” She chuckled then fled back to the kitchen like howling winds.
Ayako was startled. She saw her mom’s back dwindling and turned her head to stare at her husband. But he caught Fusae’s heel as quick as he could and fled too. Left Ayako alone to deal with her little brother.
“It’s because Harumi likes sukiyaki. I thought if I prepare sukiyaki she will come with me.” She snapped.
Mitsuru pouted and asked. “Did Harumi come too?”
“Well…no. She didn’t come.” Ayako’s eyes swept to the other side. Her voice was a thin silk line, easily to be cut apart.
“What? Then it's even more weird! If she didn’t come, why should we need to eat sukiyaki?”
“Because this prime beef is made for sukiyaki. So we have to.”
“Using other ways to eat the beef for sukiyaki will get scourge from god?”
“Because I don't know that you hate sukiyaki so much.”
“Add on that. Harumi is not a person who could be attracted by food.” Mitsuru said as he descended the stairs. “You're her mother. You should know that at least.”
“If you really hate sukiyaki so much, then just don’t eat!” She spun and started to go back to the kitchen, but Koji rushed out and got in the way.
“How about we let Mitsuru roast the part of his own beef?” He asked Ayako.
“That is the best resolve. Thank you!” Mitsuru took his cap off and leaned forward to give Koji a salute.
“WHAT?” Ayako bellowed with all her strength, so hard as if her eyes were going to pop out her eye pits. ”It’s me who bought these beef!”
“No, you didn’t listen to him carefully, he said that I only roasted my part.”
“I don’t care. I won’t permit you to do that.”
“Ayako.” Koji called softly, tried to appease his wife but he failed.
“If you want to eat roast beef then pay it from your purse.”
Ayako bolted out. Mitsuru climbed up the stairs to his room. Left Koji alone and sighed to himself. “How great a pair of siblings...”
