We had a Session -1 and a Session 0, but this is the first time we've actually had IC gameplay.
It's part of my Adventure Magazine setting for Savage Worlds, which is classic pulp adventure in the 1930s. Golden Age of Pulp Adventure, so they say.
We're starting with the classic Savage Worlds introductory module The Eye of Kilquato. I've run it before, years ago, but PEG updated it to SWADE back in 2019, and I'd not read this version of the module before.
They definitely clarified a few sticky points for me, and they've apparently rebalanced some of the later portion of the adventure, but we didn't get that far this session.
So the narrative replay is as follows:
Our heroes, consisting of Brock Miller, NYPD detective and Loose Cannon:tm:, Professor Mordecai Strang, archaeologist and possessor of ancient arcane knowledge, Ezekiel Smith, medical doctor, and Himato Shiru, ninja assassin, receive envelopes in the mail announcing their next mission:
To carve a path into the heart of the Amazon and recover the legendary (and potentially magical) gem known as the Eye of Kilquato.
The secret organization they work for, known only by reference to its base of operations, the 86th Floor of the Empire State Building, fears that the gem may hold dangerous magical powers, and as war in Europe looms on the horizon, they cannot risk the Eye falling into the hands of evildoers!
So after gearing up, the heroes catch a chartered flight to Belem, Brazil, a decent-sized city slowly decaying after the end of the 1880s rubber boom. Their pilot immediately headed to the local cantina, while the PCs went looking for their boat.
The boat, guarded by an associate of the 86th Floor, Jose Silva, was easy to find, so work quickly began on loading up their gear.
As they did so, they spotted that there were some seedy-looking toughs nearby that had clearly spotted the gringos and were taking an unhealthy interest, but since they kept their distance and never directly accosted the heroes, they were left alone.
After their gear was loaded, the PCs spent the rest of their time in Belem trying to track down any information on the Eye of Kilquato and what they could expect in the jungle.
Dr. Strang headed off to the local church, where he was able to track down records from the missionaries that had originally reported the existence of the Eye some 50 years ago. While it didn't turn up any information about the Eye they hadn't discovered back in New York, he was able to find references to a crocodile cult in the region.
Brock followed the pilot's lead and sought out the cantina, where he spent some time chatting with the bartender about their expedition. Again, while no further information was available about the Eye itself, he discovered that some other foreigners had been asking around about it a few days before, shortly afterward they had taken a boat upriver.
So the session ended with the heroes about to embark upriver on the Amazonia, well-equipped but uncertain about the journey ahead.
