On October 11, 1984, Kathryn Sullivan became the first female US astronaut to walk in space aboard the space shuttle Challenger.
Since leaving NASA, Sullivan has held a variety of senior executive positions, including Presidential appointments to the National Science Board and as Chief Scientist, Deputy Administrator and Undersecretary/Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
