Like, it's definitely hitting that sweet spot of knowing its primary audience is adults, so let's tackle the hard themes head-on and talk about/show things that aren't meant for a kid's demographic, without falling into the trap that other "western animation for adults" does

My problem with Invincible (and to a lesser extent, Vox Machina) is that it feels like they're trying too hard to prove they're shows for grown-ups by leaning into the gore/body horror/copious swearing. Granted, I am not super familiar with the source material so maybe it's equally gory. But as someone who is only taking these shows as they are,

they do come across as trying too hard for shock value, without necessarily saying anything new or interesting with it

X-men knows when and how to hit where it hurts for maximum narrative and emotional impact

and really feels like it's having a conversation meant for today
