sometimes you make a guy who is so momfriend and also so guard dog and also a huge nerd

5'6" guard dog in a beige sweater with a mechanical inability in intimidation but he's your Fighter

an npc made a comment like "I didn't know they were teaching mice to hunt" and tom, who had to act like he actually wants to be marked by the hunt was just like >:C

i'm eating good on the conflict he's having about going down the path towards becoming a hunt avatar.... it scares the shit out of him, feels antithetical to everything he's created himself to be, but also.... he and his friends are constantly in danger. and the thing that is pushing him further down that path most effectively is his drive to protect them

and that ain't going nowhere

the overarching plot is that our employer, whose organization we cannot leave (literally if someone goes to try and quit they just can't get the words out, can't send the email, etc), is trying to assemble a counsel or "senate". one avatar of each Fear Entity, of which there are 15 firmly identified (and we recently discovered there might be a 16th)

and when that happens, we have it on good authority that means Apocalypse Time

tom's is The Hunt, which is the oldest of the fears and comes from. exactly what it sounds like, the fear of becoming prey

he is not happy about this!

i haven't gotten to use the "throw yourself in front of the blow" ability yet but he sure has had it since day 1!!

he just cares about his people so muchhhhhh it is a cornerstone of his character all his choices are driven by it

a guy even offered him a way out!! him and lori. and he refused it without even considering bc he knew she would never accept it (it wasn't a super great deal tbh but it would have gotten them out of the avatar senate thing)

not to mention all their other friends, including lori's boyfriend, would still be trapped in it

there's an entity that uh. took the identity of his friend that used that + his guilt to string him along and feed off the fear+anxiety from not being sure of his intentions, and the thing that clinched tom finally cutting him off was him trying to get tom to doubt their other friends rather than him
