Wilkins' essay about masculinity and its ties to sexuality helped me a lot with my playlist project, actually. I was struggling to find a concise topic before reading it and found her writing of heteronormativity captured a lot of what I wanted to say about gendered oppression in a very clear way.
My initial plan was to write about the way masculinity is constructed and satirized by various bands, but couldn't find a meaningful way to convey this or why it's important in my own words. Satire in general was difficult to research, as it isn't as often regarded for what it is, and is instead interpreted literally.
One of my conclusions from the playlist assignment is that people who are not the intended targets of hate not only regularly receive it, but offer very clear insight to the hypocrisy of those perpetuating it. My example in the paper is about how cis-straight men can suffer from homophobia if their gender expression is non-conformist, but this also applies..
to victims of harassment from TERFs (Trans Exclusionary Radical "Feminists"), which often includes cis women who are assumed to be trans based on targeted attacks to "transvestigate" their gender- usually by picking apart their appearance in demeaning and intrusive ways on social media. An example of one of these victims would be boxer Imane Khelif.
