1. we already talked about the idea that Malcolm would like to let Walter be free during the port so he doesn't become even more miserable, and the way this is set up encourages leaving Walter to function on his own like the barge
2. there are lots of closed spaces like the barge so it would be fairly easy to try to arrange "Walter hurts Arthur,

Walter shows Misty before the information spreads any further"
3. UNLIKE the barge there are not waypoints
4. the stuff the admiral said, such as mentioning a crash, I think sufficiently is reason for Walter to think that he should act during the port and not later

yeah, like john actually doesn't actively track arthur's general state of being, on arthur's request, so it usually takes something else actually prompting concern for john to check on him, and the lack of reply will be the biggest alarm bell

I think that the cane and Arthur would probably not be separated. Because the goal is to separate a reasonably sized amount of flesh and then just leave to get it cooked (which has to be done with a separate non witness chore bot some ways away) and then brought to Misty. Walter thinks like...

I have written the comment. the part with the feathery thing at the end is a segue for the birds to show up (since I went through several ideas for how to incorporate the bird clues and decided that a full writeup could be done slightly later)
