oof, welp, just logged in on a non PBR viewer and now I know the setting breaking skies! HDR Scale is GAMMA renamed. Gamma needs to be 1.0 or things are....bad. horribly horribly bad. keep HDR Scale at 1.0, find a way around whatever elsewhere.
I'm still on a non-PBR viewer due to how many issues I have heard everyone having. What's this post referring to?
If you go somewhere everything is black...this is (probably) the issue. the gamma slider in environments (days) pre PBR messes with all over light- 1.0 is normal, lower goes darker, higher blows it out AND it applies to fullbright prims as well, so even vendors can't be seen.
in PBR they've renamed it AND it does entirely different things (very mild light/dark tweaks, and as fullbright vendors are all over mildly fucked in PBR, that's a reason to play with it as well as just generally), so no one making an environment in PBR knows that all prims/avatars/land are now black without
Allegory so DONT bump up the HDR scale slider for brightness, use the other one instead?
gogolita: yeah, leave HDR Scale at 1.0 and no other number unless you actively want to do crazy things. (there are some old EEPs with Gamma not at 1, expressly to do weird effects)
you can think of Gamma as sort of an adjustment to your screen, instead of the environment (that's not really technically correct, it doesn't do that to skies the same way)- it's like adjusting the brightness on your screen so you're blowing out everything and just making everything white set higher, and turning it down so everything goes black lower.
and now it appears that HDR Scale is the same slider just with a different name in PBR. it does MUCH smaller adjustments in PBR rendering, you can set it to 0 and it's barely noticeable. until someone looks at it in another viewer.
while people in comments came up with another reason (and then LL closed it with pretty much "shrug we aren't doing anything about that"), PBR:

non PBR:

- and that's not even an extreme example
so my janky comparison- logged in to 2 viewers. I changed the HDR Scale value for the land Environment (it started as a new default Sky of pre PBR EEP) and took pictures of about the same view.
slider does VAGUELY the same thing, but very very differently
LOL those 2 images......... wow
This is so good im sharing it on Twitter
HDR Scale simply sets how much lighting influence there is from reflection probes/the HDR sky. You can bump it up if, for example, you have a specific EEP for an interior scene and don’t want to individually adjust all the reflection probes’ ambiance settings. In general, it should be set to 1, yes.
MarkusSlingshot3: yeah, but the problem is...that it is the GAMMA slider with a different name. and there are people who will be using pre PBR viewers and will not have a choice in the matter, fucking with Gamma does WAY more than HDR Scale and people won't even know it.
buying in to PBR is all well and good...except updating to it any time soon simply isn't an option for a chunk of SL users- they will have to get new hardware first and if they only need it for SL and nothing else they are doing, why would they? fucking everything up for them without even realizing it is a problem.
I’m sorry, I know that there are some people who could be left behind, but at the end of the day PBR is already decades-old technology and at least a decade old in terms of wide adoption in the games industry. Anyone running SL on a computer that can’t handle PBR at even the lowest graphics setting likely isn’t even getting security updates for their OS.
The fact that we’ve got this sort of graphics update while maintaining backwards compatibility for the majority of content is already a miracle, offering backwards compatibility for long-since deprecated computers is simply unrealistic
I’m not saying the PBR update is perfect, but it’s already complicated enough and would only become more so if we promote hacking the workflow for edge cases. We’d be better off educating users on unoptimised content which is much more likely to cause problems for older computers than the new streamlined PBR viewers that actually offer better performance
MarkusSlingshot3: SL isn't attracting new users- if it were, that would be (somewhat) different, but it just...isn't. they need to hold on to existing users to survive. and the performance isn't really better? it was briefly in beta but even that tanked, and alchemy is the only viewer that is at all acceptable on multiple computers, including a new as
of last year gaming machine. and even IT has a pretty major problem with a lot of PBR textures not loading completely. the environments people use (and will continue to for who knows how long) flatten out light making "pure" PBR textures all but useless, and people are still bitching about face shadows so i don't see that changing soon. and don't get me
started on the clusterfuck of environment probes- if you make buildings/skyboxes you can deal with it...but otherwise, ha. (and the fucking water because of it...) we're stuck with it so there's no choice in the matter, they won't be going back, but it's not been an impressive launch or implementation. and renaming sliders to mess with how people CAN
function just makes that worse.
i want to like PBR. i really really do. but...it's an over complicated mess that only sometimes works.
(and even though they are technically long past OS end of life, i'm still getting security updates on 2 machines that can't run PBR viewers. i use them exclusively to make dumb tvs smart and haven't run SL, or anything else beyond a web browser, on them in more than a decade, but they still updated themselves earlier this week)
yes, i do have a problem, i almost never get rid of a computer! i just find something else for them to do
