I'd already been annoyed about it, because it was definitely a "this could be an email or a discord chat" kind of meeting.
And then, I was the only panel director to show up.
So it was just me and three members of the senior staff.
And, of course, it was all the way across town, so I had to schlep over there in my pos car and hope it made it.
However, on the bright side, I think they're gonna leave me alone and let me do my job now, because I proved that I'm actually, you know, competent and actually doing the work.
I think they're a little gunshy after they had to fire one of the panel directors from last year's convention because he didn't do his job, like, at all.
And we're still dealing with the fallout from that.
The biggest issue for me was the meeting location, because their justification for it (at a library) was "it's free!"
You know what else would've been free? Any of the rooms at my shop
I've got 7000 square feet of space, guys. Could've had the meeting at my shop, wouldn't have had to dick with library scheduling bullshit, wouldn't have had to worry about keeping within our timeslot, etc etc.
Not to mention that another member of the con staff works there, so when questions about social media and marketing came up, we could've just fuckin asked.
Because the social media manager for the con is my fuckin social media manager
Like. I love this con. I love the people involved in this con. I wouldn't be a fuckin panel director if I didn't. But there's gotta be a better way of doing things than blind hope and unreliable people. We are still down two panel directors that I'm aware of, and who knows if we'll lose any more.
And the poor con chair ends up shouldering the burden when people flake out at the last minute or fail to communicate or whatever else goes wrong.
