i bring up near because he's a character that just insights a frankly baffling amount of rage in a lot of people. i've met people who projected their abusive relatives onto him and took anyone liking him as a personal attack on them.

Absolutely wild. I usually consume media in a vacuum to form my own opinions first, and I never would have expected this amount of rage about Near of all characters

most of them have only watched the anime and they feel he's 1. cold and emotionless 2. not L and 3. they're mad that he won and L didn't

or 4, and this was bizarrely common in the death note fandom (at least it used to be on tumblr), they have a personal relationship that they project onto mello and near's rivalry and relate to mello's inferiority complex as a reflection of their real life situation. i've encountered this specific phenomena three seperate times

I felt the best parts were with L but that comes down to my personal preferences with rivals rather than holding it against the successors. I still thought they were neat.

DN fandom was super weird in general so not rly surprised how weird they are about Near in specific

The best thing I ever did was be years late to the fandom so I just grabbed all the food and chilled on my own/with a few friends
