The BARLEY in the song derive from the fact that the rebels often carried barley oats in their pockets as provisions for when on the march.This gave rise to the post-rebellion phenomenon of barley growing, marking the Croppy-Holes.MASS UNMARKED GRAVES which slain rebels were thrown into, symbolising the regenerative nature of Irish resistance to British rule

歌詞的創作角度紮根於一名來自Contae Loch Garman的年輕愛爾蘭叛軍的經歷，這個年輕人投身於反抗英國的武裝部隊（1798年的愛爾蘭起義有關），他犧牲他和愛人的戀情。歌名、歌詞提及的大麥，是大麥穀粒或燕麥，當時叛軍常在口袋裝著麥子粒來作為行軍中的口糧。這習慣也是叛亂結束後的愛爾蘭麥田大面積生長原因，新出現的麥田也成為愛爾蘭叛軍們的無名墳墓Croppy-Holes…類似台灣的百姓公、無主墳。當時被英軍殘殺的叛軍的屍體，扔到沒有標記的無名墓坑，一如在二二八大屠殺被中國人蔣介石牠們的中華民國殖民統治體制屠殺的台灣人民，他們愛爾蘭叛軍口袋裡剩下的麥粒便逐漸長成了麥田。每年春天麥田如期生長，人們相傳這象徵著愛爾蘭人民對來自英國的壓迫的反抗永不停歇，愛爾蘭人民永遠與占據他們領土的英國人鬥爭…會是台灣未來的預言嗎？
