in terms of fandom shipping her most popular ship is actually aelwyn/sam nightingale which existed prior to the seven and prior to sam getting more than a few lines and a blurb of characterization

which i like but a lot of the fic that i read put forward this idea that aelwyn is like penelope but actually a Good Person Who Is Nice and a Good Partner/Friend which

no actually the difference between penelope and aelwyn is that aelwyn lived long enough for any of the pcs to give a shit about her. they were both teenage girls in way over their heads who did horrible things out of what amounted to extremely shallow reasons (deep cynical boredom and cowardice for aelwyn, megalomania and sunk cost fallacy for penelope)

meanwhile we get some background with penelope in the seven and it's like. unlike aelwyn her family life isn't entirely bad. they're solidly upper middle class, her mother isn't a bad person and her father probably was okay as a parent according to sam and penelope's own testimonies but like

there's this very weird all american patriarchal air around it. we're introduced to penelope's mom and she looks and sounds a lot like penelope but her life is a mess, her husband has been openly cheating on her and has just finalized the divorce proceedings, she's had plastic surgery because her husband doesn't age but she very much does.

they keep penelope's room completely untouched and nobody so much as mentions her name in the house. her mom has basically replaced her with sam and it's like.... she doesn't have any excuses or tragic backstory but i do also see how her specific brand of just. absolutely unhinged madness sprouted from all that.

i think you have but basically... beato and battler are good in a fantasy layer but sayo and battler don't really do anything for me on a mystery layer. like it's very important to understanding sayo just how much she shaped her life around this sheltered and naive idea of battler, but at the end of the day they never actually

knew eachother as anything other than ideas. sayo in the years between the promise and the rokkenjiima massacre and battler piecing it all together in the aftermath. which i do appreciate but it's not quite a ship

battler and beato on the fantasy layer somehow swing between toxic sweet and codependent it's great.
