tinylongwing I have a bird question! Someone mentioned to me that I should take down my bird feeders in the summer to encourage them to eat insects. I'd never heard this before. Should I? I have a hummingbird feeder and a regular feeder that I have a sunflower seed mix in.

We get scrub jays, house finches and mourning doves at the regular feeder.

Actually it's this one. Because we noticed we had finches: https://imgs.plurk.com/QEC/UgM/iak0V4gTL5L4KL41gkil1cKkq4y_lg.jpg

There's no real need, birds already get a minority of their food from feeders, they have lots and lots of wild sources and especially in summer if they need insects they're already off finding them

I leave my thistle feeder up for finches year-round and I see a huge fluctuation in use from month to month depending on what's available for them to eat that isn't at my feeder - like I get a lot more finches in winter, whereas right now a couple just briefly stop by and then move on once a day or so

they're pretty capable of finding food as they need to and usually don't come to rely on feeders as their main food source

excellent. Because I like watching them and the cats like watching them.

the regular feeder is one that if they sit on the rim they'll crap on the ground so it doesn't get as gross but damn, the hummingbirds are just going to town on that thing.
