they differed from the random mobs you found in dungeons in that A: They had a physical presence on the map, with their own behavior AI determining where they went

and B: They were typically significantly stronger than you when you first find them

So they made for effective meat barriers

they could also follow you into your random encounters

just to drive up the terror

So turning the corner to find one of those usually fucks a player up

only to run into an random encounter as you failed to exit the zone of influence

you are now on a timer to kill the mobs before it intrudes
