we make him save half of whatever he gets, either from his allowance or as gifts. The other half he can spend.

He gets 2 a week for allowance, so 1 is saved. He should only have about $20.

that's what i'm doing as well. 1/2 keep to spend, 1/2 into savings. i think it's a great thing for kids to do.
