There's no easy answer and I would imagine it largly would depend on one's religious beliefs - To the athiest it would probably be genetics

to the Hindu, the ability to reach Samahdi, to the Jew, Christian, and Muslim it probably has to do with us being created in God's image.

I think the better discussion in regards to the Giver is where the line between individual liberties and utilitarian views should be drawn.

When should we give up our own freedoms for the good of the community (or country, world, etc.)
