What's the difference between fans & friends

There are certain things I like. Friends vs. fans needs some work. I can add everyone as a friend but it automatically has me following them

I think it's for setting up groups - like maybe a GeekBrief.TV group for updates, etc.

SMS for these things is overrated. I just like it how spaces aren't included in your character count - I can fit so much more in.
